Do business owners really need self-care? Ep 300 of the She's Just Getting Started Podcast

Do Business Owners Really Need Self-Care?

You already have a million things on your plate—so taking care of yourself probably feels like the last thing on the list. I get it. But here’s the truth: self-care isn’t just indulgence or a reward for “getting it all done”—it’s actually one of the smartest things you can do for your business.

After 300 podcast episodes and 20+ years of building businesses, I’ve learned that you are your business’s greatest asset—and if you’re running on empty, everything suffers. Burnout, resentment, confusion… they sneak in when we’re constantly doing and never refueling. And sometimes, we end up resenting the very dream we were once so excited to build.

Let’s rethink what self-care actually means for business owners.

It’s not all spa days and green juice (although hey, I love a good facial and smoothie). I’m talking about practical, sustainable rhythms that fuel your body, clear your mind, and help you keep showing up with creativity, energy, and purpose.

1. Move Your Body—Every Day

I walk about four miles almost every day—usually with a podcast or audiobook going. It clears my head, boosts my mood, and gives me some of my best ideas. And it’s so simple. You don’t need a gym membership or a 6am alarm—just lace up your shoes and go for 20–25 minutes. Bonus points if you bring your dog or a friend along.

2. Fuel Yourself Well

I’m not a nutritionist, but I know how I feel when I eat real food vs. processed junk. Adding more protein and veggies into your meals can make a huge difference in your energy and focus. Start small: What foods help you feel good—clear, steady, satisfied? Eat more of those.

3. Outsource What Drains You

This one can be hard—especially if you're used to doing everything yourself. But whether it’s cleaning your house, planning your meals, or managing your books, if something drains your energy, it's okay to let it go. Hire help. Use tools. Automate. You're building a business—there’s no trophy for doing it all alone.

4. Prioritize Real Connection

It’s easy to get stuck behind a screen, especially when you're running a business from home. But we need people. Not just clients and followers—but real, life-giving connection. Grab coffee with a friend. Go to that women’s group. Take a fitness class. Connection isn’t just nice—it’s part of staying mentally and emotionally grounded.

5. Make Space to Think

This is one of the most overlooked forms of self-care: quiet thinking time. No podcast. No planner. No problem-solving. Just space to breathe, reflect, and check in with yourself. Where is your business headed? What’s working? What needs to shift? Give yourself a moment—maybe with your coffee on the porch or during a walk—to just think. You’ll be amazed at what clarity comes.

These five practices aren’t selfish—they’re essential. And they don’t have to be complicated. Start with one. Build it into your week. You’ll feel the difference, and so will your business.

Because taking care of you is one of the smartest, most sustainable business moves you can make.
