Ep 331: How to share what you do without being a weirdo or salesy - for business owners.

You know that moment when someone asks what you do and your brain just... freezes?

Yeah. Every small business owner I coach has been there.

Here's what's really happening: You're worried you'll sound braggy or salesy, so you stumble through some vague response that leaves them confused and you feeling like a weirdo.

Let's fix that.

The Accordion Method:

Start short. Expand only if they're interested.

Your shortest version should be effortless and specific. Sometimes "I host a podcast" creates curiosity. Other times "I'm a business coach" works. Pick what feels natural for YOU.

If they lean in, add more. But keep it conversational—you're answering a question, not pitching.

The Framework:

"I help [WHO] do [WHAT] so they can [RESULT]."

Examples:

  • "I help midlife women get strong without lifting heavy weights."
  • "I help new business owners explain what they do without sounding robotic."
  • "I help homeowners create beautiful yards even if they kill everything they plant."

See? You just turned a vague label into an actual promise.

Three rules:

  1. Sound like YOU. If you wouldn't say it out loud, don't write it.
  2. Keep it SHORT. Say it before the elevator doors close.
  3. Say it with confidence. People pick up your energy before they process your words.

Here's what to do:

Write three versions. Say each one out loud ten times. Pick the one that feels effortless.

Test it on real people. If they lean in and ask a follow-up, you nailed it.

That sentence becomes your North Star for everything—your website, your Instagram bio, your content.

Stop overthinking. Start saying it.
