What actually is your BRAND?

What Actually Is a Brand? (And Why Your Logo Isn't It)

If you've been spending time perfecting your Instagram grid, obsessing over your logo colors, or saving up for a fancy rebrand — pause for a second. Because most people are building a brand backwards. And today we're clearing that up.

Your Brand Is Not What You Think It Is

Let's start with what a brand is NOT. It's not your logo. It's not your fonts. It's not your color palette or your tagline or your perfectly curated Instagram aesthetic. Those things matter — they're the outfit — but they are not the person wearing it.

Here's the truth: you could change your logo tomorrow and it wouldn't change what people actually think of you. That's because your brand lives somewhere else entirely.

So What Is a Brand, Actually?

Jeff Bezos said it best: Your brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room.

It's the feeling someone gets when they land on your page, open your email, or watch your video. It's how you respond to a DM. Whether you follow through on your promises. How you handle something when it goes wrong. Your brand is built in every single interaction — and it's either working for you or against you.

Think about it like dating or friend groups. Some people just have a great reputation. You'd recommend them without hesitation. That's what you're building. A reputation so solid that people talk about you, refer you, and keep coming back — without you having to ask.

You're Building a Personal Brand Whether You Know It Or Not

Especially for those of you with online businesses — you are the brand. Your story, your values, your character. These aren't extras. They're everything. And your values show up whether you name them or not. People can feel when you're consistent. They can also feel when you're not.

The good news? You have more control than you think. You control how you show up, how you treat people, how you deliver on your promises. That's what builds a brand worth talking about.

What To Do Right Now

Sit with this question: What do I want people to feel when they find me?

If you're just starting out, get a simple logo — something decent on Canva or from Fiverr — and focus your energy on building your reputation. As your business grows and you have social proof, that's when investing in a full visual brand makes the most sense.

And if your brand feels muddy or inconsistent right now, go back to that question. The clarity is in there.
