How to Start Using AI in Your Business (Even If You're Not Techy) in 2026

Let me ask you something. Have you been watching everyone talk about AI — on social media, on YouTube, in conversations with friends — and quietly wondering if you're already too far behind? Or if it's even something meant for someone like you?

I want to answer that right now: you're not behind. And yes, it is absolutely for you.

Today I'm going to walk you through how to start using AI in your business — simple, no-jargon steps that you can actually do today. Because the truth is, this isn't about technology. It's about getting your time back. And that is something every one of you needs.

Why AI Feels So Overwhelming (And Why That's Normal)

First, I want to acknowledge the feeling. Because I know it's real.

If you've been thinking that AI is expensive, or that it's built for businesses with a whole team behind them — not for a solo entrepreneur or small shop owner — I get it. If you've been telling yourself you'll figure it out later when it's easier, I understand. And if the word "AI" just makes your eyes glaze over because you've never considered yourself techy, you are in very good company.

But here's what I need you to understand: the cost of waiting is real.

Adoption of AI jumped from 23% to 47% in just two years. It's the fastest-adopted business technology since cloud computing. And for the first time with any technology, small businesses are now adopting it faster than large companies. Seventy-six percent of small businesses are already using or actively exploring it.

You are not behind yet. But the window is closing. Today is the day.

The Myth That's Keeping You Stuck

Here's something that surprised me. Researchers found that 77% of small business owners who aren't using AI say they see no applicable use cases for their business. They look at it and think, that's not really for me.

And the researchers call it what it is: an education gap. Not a technology gap. An education gap.

So let me close it for you right now: AI is not a technology upgrade, like buying a new computer or a better camera. It's a day-to-day task level tool. It helps with the ordinary things that eat your time every single week — writing captions, drafting emails, creating outlines, answering questions, organizing your thoughts.

The question isn't do I understand AI? The question is: what do I do every week that eats my time? That's where AI lives.

What It's Actually Doing for Small Businesses

I know numbers help, so here are a few that matter.

91% of small businesses using AI report a revenue boost. Social media content is the number one use. And on average, it saves about 175 hours per year on social media content alone — that's five to fifteen hours a week on marketing tasks. Forty-seven percent of small business owners use it to reduce stress and decision fatigue.

The businesses winning right now aren't using eighty million apps. They're matching one tool to one specific problem and starting there. Simple. Focused. Effective.

Five Steps to Start Today

Here's exactly what I want you to do — five steps, nothing overwhelming.

1. Pick a platform.

There are several out there — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok. I personally use Claude, and I love it. Something about the way it communicates feels more straightforward to me. I actually had to tell ChatGPT to stop telling me every idea I had was amazing — I need honest feedback, not flattery. You can tell your AI model exactly how you want it to talk to you. That matters. Start somewhere, and Claude is a great place to begin.

2. Pick one task.

Just one thing that you do every week in your business. Maybe you struggle with Instagram captions. Maybe you write a newsletter and stare at a blank screen. Maybe you create reels and need a quick script. Maybe you want help brainstorming blog post titles. For me, it's my email newsletter and podcast outlines. I write out what I want to say, paste it in, and have it clean it up and structure it — all in my voice, all my ideas, just sharper. What's your one thing?

3. Talk to it like a person.

This is the step most people skip. They type in something vague and get something generic back and decide AI doesn't work. No — you have to talk to it like a human being. Explain what you need the same way you'd explain it to an assistant sitting next to you. The more context you give, the better the output. And there's even a microphone option so you don't have to type at all.

4. Edit it. Don't just post it.

AI is a starting point, not a final draft. Your voice has to show up. Your customers follow you because of you — your perspective, your personality, the way you see things. Review everything. Adjust it. Make it sound like you. That's the whole point.

5. Give it a couple of weeks before you decide if it's working.

One try doesn't count. I mean it. You are going to be a little clunky at first — that's normal. The more you use it, the better you'll get at working with it. I've made it a personal goal to learn something new about AI every week, and it keeps getting better. Give yourself the grace of a learning curve.

Your Business Is Still Yours

I want to close with this because it matters to me.

AI is not going to replace what makes your business yours. It will not take over your creativity, your relationships, or the reason your customers chose you in the first place. The human behind the business is why people keep buying. That doesn't change.

What AI can do is give you your time back — so you can do more of what you love, serve your people better, and grow without burning out.

You don't have to understand how it works. You don't have to be techy. You just have to start.

Pick one task this week. Open Claude or ChatGPT and hand it to AI. That's the whole assignment. I genuinely cannot wait to hear how it goes for you.
