Ep 354: This ONE thing qualifies you to run your business. (it's not your certifications)

Jul 23, 2026

Let me ask you something. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "Who am I to teach this? Who am I to sell this? Who am I to even be running my own business?"

If that thought has ever crept in, I want you to know something right now — that mind drama is only going to hold you back if you let it. And today, I want to end it for good.

Because there's a myth going around, and I fell for it too when I started. The myth is that you need some massive degree or certification before you're allowed to call yourself an expert. That until you have the accolades, the training, the "official" stamp of approval, you haven't earned the right to be looked up to.

Here's the truth — that's not what makes people buy from you.

The Credentials Myth

Now, I do think credentials matter sometimes. If you got a degree or a certification, that shows you went for something, you stayed with it, you solved it. And yes, there are cases where you need to be walking the walk — if you're coaching people to build muscle and lose fat, you probably need to be living that lifestyle yourself.

But for most of you? What you're offering, you're already good at. You've done it, or you've helped someone else do it. You have authority. It just hasn't clocked yet.

I saw a clip recently of a celebrity telling paparazzi, "It's not clocking to you" — and my family has said that to each other ever since. That's exactly what's happening here. Your experience, everything you've worked through, everything you've put blood, sweat, and tears into — that's your credibility. It's already there. It just hasn't clocked.

Your Story Becomes The Credential

Here's what I want you to really sit with: it's not just your experience that's your credibility. Your story is your credibility.

Think about a jewelry maker having a hard season in life, who starts making pieces just to get through it — using skills she's always had, not even thinking about starting a business — until her friends start telling her she needs to sell this. That story is what sells her jewelry. Not a certificate.

Or think about an interior designer who bought a falling-apart house, spent years remodeling it herself, and is now doing it for other people. Nobody's asking where she got her design license. They're looking at her before-and-afters on Instagram thinking, "I need her to help me."

When I started this business, I'd never thought of myself as a teacher. I have a marketing degree, but no one who hired me cared about that. They cared about my history of running my own businesses — and about my story of wanting a business that fit into my life instead of a life that had to fit into my business. That story is what made people want to work with me.

Why Story Sells (When Credentials Don't)

People get sucked into stories the way they get sucked into a good documentary — you know, the ones where you watch the 30-second Netflix preview and you're already hooked. That's what a real story does. It pulls people in.

Your audience doesn't want the most polished, most impressive version of you. They want to know what you went through to get here. They want the real thing, not AI slop, not a robot, not a highlight reel with nothing underneath it.

So if you've been thinking, "My story isn't dramatic enough, I don't have enough accolades" — that's fear talking, and it's lying to you.

Write Your Story Down

Here's what I want you to do today. Write down your story. Not your resume. Not your degree. Not your training.

Write down the one experience that qualifies you to help the exact person you want to help. What got you here? What changed your life, or helped a friend, or showed you a gap in the market? Get it written down so it's repeatable — so you can share it in a podcast interview, at the grocery store, on a walk with a friend, in your Instagram captions, on your About page.

You don't need permission to call yourself qualified. You're already qualified — because you lived it.

What's one experience from your story that you could start sharing today? I'd love to hear from you — come find me on Instagram at @startwithkimberlybrock.
