Ep 359: Why what you're selling isn't working (and how to fix that!)

Aug 27, 2026

Let me ask you something. How many product or service ideas are sitting in your notes app right now?

Be honest. Ten? Twenty? Somewhere in there is the one you almost launched last spring, the one a coach told you would sell, and the one you're currently building even though something about it doesn't feel quite right.

And here's the part nobody says out loud: you've probably launched something already that didn't work. Something you were sure would be a hit. Something that made sense on paper. And when it landed with a thud, you quietly wondered if the problem was you.

It isn't. But you are starting in the wrong place, and I want to show you exactly where.

The Reason This Feels So Hard

We start with the product.

We sit down and we ask: what should I be selling? What are my competitors offering? What's popular right now? What's actually converting for people in my niche?

That question has no bottom. There will always be another trend, another product category, another thing that seems to be working for somebody else. So you never land anywhere. You just keep circling.

I've lived this from both sides. I've had product businesses where I got so excited that I ordered way too much inventory and ended up buried in it, even while the business was doing well. And I've had the coaching side of it too, where you want the group program AND the one-on-one AND the course AND the retreat, and you genuinely cannot figure out where to put your energy.

If you sell physical products, you're nodding. If you sell services, you're nodding too. It's the same problem wearing different clothes.

And Now We Have AI Making It Worse

I'm going to be really honest with you about something.

I use ChatGPT and Claude every single day. And I have started to wonder whether I'm spending MORE time on ideas now than I did before I had them. I go down an hour-long research rabbit hole. I come out the other side with fifteen new possibilities. I have to stop and ask Claude, okay, what was I actually supposed to be focusing on today?

I feel like I've developed some kind of business ADD, and I don't think I'm alone in that.

There's software now that will analyze Etsy and tell you exactly what's selling. You can pull data on any market you want. And none of that is bad — we SHOULD understand what people want to buy. But the question underneath all of it has to be: does this apply to me? Is this right for MY business, my people, my season of life right now?

Because when we skip that question, we end up building something that belongs to somebody else.

What This Actually Looks Like

I had a client with a service business she genuinely loved. Then she added a tangible product on the side, because it seemed like what people wanted and it was cheaper to sell than her services.

She hated it. It ate her time, it frustrated her, and it wasn't making meaningful money. When I asked her why she was doing it, she didn't really have an answer beyond: everyone else is.

I had another client with a product business who started with a few focused ideas and somehow arrived at launch day with about fifty products. They were all technically in her niche. But her attention was pulled in every direction, and when she opened her store, nobody could tell what her signature product was. Nobody knew why they were there.

Compare that to what the big names do. Scarlett Johansson launched a skincare line called The Outset, and it is narrow on purpose — sensitive skin, one clear promise, one clear story about why it exists for her.

You are not going to out-Amazon Amazon. You are not going to out-Sephora Sephora. What you can do is be so specific that people know exactly why they came to you.

The First Question Is Not "What Should I Sell"

The first question is: what is right for my people right now?

And I want you to notice how different that feels in your body. One question sends you outward, scrolling and comparing and researching. The other sends you back to the thing you were excited about in the first place.

I Am Doing This To Myself Right Now

I'll tell on myself, because I'm in the middle of it.

I've been building a boutique — encouraging gifts for women who are starting something new, whether that's a business or a whole new chapter of life. It came from a real gap I noticed. My people needed something tangible they could hold, and I created a luxury journal that came straight out of my soul. It's arriving later this year and I cannot wait.

That journal was the whole point. That was the original intention.

And then I started adding. This is selling, that's popular, I should capture this market too. Before I knew it I was mentally competing with Etsy and Amazon on a boutique that hasn't even opened yet.

I was actually working through it with Claude and got told, in so many words, that I needed to circle back and get focused, and that in a few months when I had real data I could expand. Which is EXACTLY what I tell my clients. Sometimes you need to hear your own advice in somebody else's voice.

I've had to become very discriminating about what goes on that site. Not because more is bad, but because more without a filter is just noise.

Your Mission Is The Filter

So if something in your business feels out of alignment right now — an offer that isn't selling, a product you don't enjoy making, a launch that didn't land — stop and ask yourself why you added it.

Did you add it because you genuinely believed it would help the people you set out to serve? Or did you add it because it was popular, or because a coach said you should, or because you wanted to be known as the person who has it all?

Then go back to the beginning. What was that almost childlike thing you were so excited to do for people? I would almost guarantee it's gotten crowded out by shiny objects.

Your mission is the filter. Once you know what you're actually on a mission to do, the offer question gets so much smaller. It stops being "what should I sell" and becomes "what's the best way to get her there." And anything that doesn't move her closer gets a no — not no forever, just no for right now.

You don't need a hundred offers. You need a few that are genuinely remarkable. Because when something is remarkable, people share it without an affiliate link. They just want to be the one who told their friend about you.

Do This Today

Write down your mission in one sentence. How do you want to help people, and what's the best way to help them right now?

Then look at everything you're currently offering or considering, and hold each one up against it.

I want to relieve you of something before you go. You are not indecisive. You are not asking dumb questions. You do not stink at this. You're a good business owner who set out to help people, and you just need to make sure the things you're selling actually do that.
