Ep 336: What no one tells you about strength training and eating during menopause - with Cam Allen
Mar 19, 2026Nobody really prepares you for what happens to your body in perimenopause and menopause. That's exactly why I had Cam Allen on the podcast — a holistic health and fitness coach who went through surgical menopause overnight and came out with a mission to help the rest of us understand what's actually happening to our bodies.
Here are the biggest takeaways from our conversation:
You might be over-exercising. If your sleep is suffering, you're not seeing progress, or you're just running on fumes — your body might be in breakdown mode, not build-up mode. Recovery matters more than we think.
You only need 60 minutes of strength training a week. Cam breaks hers into 10-minute "menopause minis" — lower body, upper body, core. Your brain can get on board with 10 minutes, and the ripple effect into the rest of your day is real.
Eat before you work out. Fasted workouts are a hard no for most women. You cannot build muscle without fuel — even just 100-200 calories before makes a difference.
Carbs are not the enemy. Your brain runs on carbohydrates. Going too low-carb can actually spike your blood sugar from stress hormones. Whole, real food is always the answer.
Eat more protein. Women who increased protein without changing their exercise actually gained more muscle. Animal protein is the gold standard because of leucine — the amino acid your body needs to build muscle.
Stress changes your hormones. Even everyday frustration can spike your blood sugar. In midlife, it's okay to say no to things that don't light you up. Your body is always sending signals — we just have to slow down enough to listen.
