Ep 25: Your struggle IS your process. How to feel it, own it, and LEARN from it!

Apr 09, 2020

Are you struggling personally, or in your business? Feeling anxious during this whole shift that is taken place in our world with the quarantine?

Realize that your struggle today is actually the process that you NEED to be going through to become the person you are truly meant to be!

I heard a story the other day that my pastor shared and I just had to share it here:

"The emperor moth is the most majestic species among all the moths. It has wide wings spanning out majestically when it flies. Before it can become a full-grown moth, it has to be a pupa in a cocoon. Now, the interesting fact about the moth’s cocoon is that the neck of the cocoon is very narrow.

In order that it becomes a moth, the pupa of the moth must squeeze its way out of the narrow neck. One day a man found a cocoon of an emperor moth. He took it home so that he could watch the moth come out of the cocoon. He sat and watched the moth struggling to force the body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. It just seemed to be stuck. Then the man being kind decided to help the moth. So he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The moth then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. He expected that the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the little moth spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. A few days later, it died. What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the moth to get through the tiny opening was the way of forcing fluid from the body of the moth into its wings so that it would be ready for flight. Once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Freedom and flight would only come after the struggle. By depriving the moth of a struggle, he deprived the emperor moth of health. The only way out - is through. --Robert Frost
I personally have been through some business struggles...and soon realized that they made me better. But what is strange, is that sometimes when a major shift/pivot happens in our lives, sometimes it's easy...and sometimes it's not.

When I started my business over 20 years ago, it was easy. I left corporate technology sales and took the leap in entrepreneurship. It wasn't hard. It was awesome!

But other times it's been hard. When I was closing my last online boutique, it took me 2 years to finally decide to do it. I knew it would probably never hit the high that it once reached. I would need to put more money into and take measures to really keep up with our ever-changing online marketplace. And I ultimately decided to close it...but not until I debated it for 2 years. The shift was not easy. It was painful - that business was my baby.

Then I started this business & podcast. When first recording the early episode, I was interviewing my sister, Nicole,  and I was so nervous. I kept screwing up and she could tell I was frustrated...and she said "You know this IS the process, right? This is what will make you grow. This frustration and messing up and regrouping, this IS your process. This is how you get better!"  Yes...she was right. She gave such great advice, and yes the episode turned out great - in fact you can listen here: Episode 7

When you struggle, you are forced to shift. To be resourceful. To learn. To seek out help. To find mentors. And this is when the magic happens...

So even if you are in a struggle today personally or in your business, I challenge you to think differently. Don't just settle with the struggle and accept it. Realize that it is here to make you better.  Stop and realize that this is your process of becoming who you are truly meant to be!
